The Michigan Legislature passed into law today a ban on partial birth abortion, taking up the Citizens Override of Governor Jennifer Granholms earlier veto. This is an historic day for Michigan. The people have spoken up against a brutal and inhumane practice, letting it be known that our state will not be held hostage to extremist positions. I would like to thank everybody who helped to obtain the record number of signatures for the effort -- in record time no less. I would especially like to thank the Michigan Catholic Conference for its work, sacrificing time that could have been spent on other projects to help Michigan citizens. This bill should have become law when it first passed the Legislature. Nonetheless, one Governors veto and one Peoples Override later, we are where 4 out of every 5 people in Michigan know in their hearts we should be.
