GRANHOLM'S GALL  by Betsy DeVos 1/7/2004 at 15:44
"Off the Record" host Tim Skubick and Gov. Jennifer Granholm were talking about budget cuts when Skubick asked whether the governor thought it was "interesting" that some of the people calling for the cuts were "so-called Christians."

Granholm: "Yeah, I do and I’ll tell you why. What I think is so interesting about this is that people come from very, very different places and yet we all want to do what is best for the state. Often those who cloak themselves in a cape of religiosity happen to be some who are the biggest cutters. Now, some of that can balance out. But when you get to cutting the services for the least of these -- in the 25th chapter of Matthew in the 37th verse, the Lord says, ’Whatsoever you do to the least of these, so also you do unto me,’ -- that’s when I question whether somebody is really living out the faith that they profess."

Skubick: "You’re gonna get some flak on that comment."

Granholm: "Well, all I’m suggesting is that I think we do have to keep those values in mind and even through the budget process. So I would hope that we can do that throughout this year."

Wow. That is bizarre.

It is quite ARROGANT for the Governor to cloak her views on balancing the budget in religious terms in order to demonize her political opponents.

It really takes a lot of gall to suggest that letting people keep more of their money won’t result in more help for "widows and orphans", and for "the least of these".

The Governor may not know it, but there are quite a few folks in Michigan who give regularly to charities and churches and view this as an excellent and efficient way to help the poor and the less fortunate. Apparently she thinks that only government can do that.

It almost sounds like she is saying that "God told her to delay the tax cut". She should see if Jimmy Swaggart is available to do press for her.

By the way, I’ve got a scripture for her from Matthew chapter 7 - "Judge not, lest you be judged."

Finally, it seems that God is speaking to her rather selectively - what Bible verse does she use as justification for her veto of the Partial Birth Abortion ban?
