Lansing, MI—The Michigan Supreme Court should follow the law and act in the best interest of Michigan residents by refusing to hear the Steffek Tea Party appeal. Presently, the Steffek Tea Party and its “candidates” will not appear on the ballot due to action by the State Board of Canvassers and a ruling from the Michigan Court of Appeals.

“From start to finish, the Steffek Tea Party has been a fraud,” said Michigan Republican Party Chief of Staff Josh Venable. “Democrat operatives, seeing the Republican tidal wave coming their way, are desperate and will stop at nothing to win, even if that means defrauding and disenfranchising Michigan voters and breaking the law.”

Facts show that the Steffek Tea Party failed to meet the requirements of the law in numerous areas including:

  • Would-be candidates listed on the Certification of Tea Party Nomination were nominated at the convention on July 24. However, all but one affidavit filed were pre-dated, or completed prior to convention.
  • The certification indicates all candidates were nominated at the state convention. This claim immediately invalidates all candidates who are supposed to be nominated by district caucuses “in conjunction with” the convention. (MCL 168.686a(4)
  • Affidavits of identity were not filed properly with the Michigan Secretary of State.
  • Failure to follow statutory requirements regarding a call to convention.

“It is quite convenient for the Democrats that this case comes days after Jennifer Granholm cemented the liberal majority on the Supreme Court with her own hand-picked nominee,” Venable continued. “The Granholm-Weaver-Davis backroom deal is just the latest in a long list of Democrats’ dirty tricks.

“The Supreme Court can decide to stand up and protect and preserve the integrity of our elections, or they can play politics and allow the greatest fraud perpetrated on Michigan voters to stand. Michigan voters will watch ‘Granholm’s Justice’ Alton Davis very closely.”
