Whitmer, Greimel and Democrats must demand Hathaway resign
or go down in history as hypocrites that put partisanship first

LANSING, Mich., Nov. 21, 2012 — Today, the Michigan Republican Party called upon Democratic elected leaders to break their silence and put Michigan families and judicial system first by calling on Democratic Supreme Court Justice Diane Hathaway to resign.

Matt Frendewey, communications director for the Michigan Republican Party issued the following statement:

“Sen. Gretchen Whitmer and Rep. Tim Greimel need to both put their partisanship aside and demand Diane Hathaway resign. Both Democratic leaders are lawyers and understand the severity of this situation and how Justice Hathaway’s actions are tarnishing Michigan’s judicial system.

“Michigan citizens deserve to know, will Democrats put their partisan identification before public policy by protecting Diane Hathaway or will they put Michigan citizens first by calling on Justice Hathaway to resign?

“Only months ago, Democrats, fueled purely by political ambition, casually issued demands of resignation before charges were ever filed, and the silence by Democrats, today, reeks of the political hypocrisy that offends the common sense of Michigan citizens.

“The Michigan Supreme Court and purity of Michigan’s judicial system is too important to allow political games to protect Supreme Court Justice Diane Hathaway. Hathaway’s conduct undermines her judgements and the credibility of our courts. Michigan citizens will judge Whitmer, Greimel and all Democrats as they chose sides between an impartial and clean judicial system, or protecting Democratic Supreme Court Justice Diane Hathaway.”

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Justice filed civil charges against Justice Hathaway in connection with a widely reported unethical short sale and real estate transactions. The charges alleged that Hathaway committed systematic fraud and laundered money.
