Progressives are fighting to save Peters’ Senate seat so they can implement the Green New Deal
LANSING, Mich., October 27, 2020 – Michigan needs a U.S. Senator who will stand up for Michigan’s auto industry, not play a key role in implementing the Green New Deal, Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox said today.
“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez exposed that progressives are fighting to save Gary Peters so he can help them force the Green New Deal down the auto industry’s throat, killing jobs and damaging Michigan’s economy,” said Cox. “Peters has quietly solicited progressive support and they are now loudly putting Michigan voters on notice that they will be using his vote in the Senate to pass radical plans like the Green New Deal.”
On CNN last weekend, Ocasio-Cortez said that reelecting Gary Peters is key to a “once in a generation” chance for progressives to run wild with policies that will hurt Michigan’s economy and family checkbooks.
With Peters on board, Ocasio-Cortez said, progressives will make “leaps in policy” on plans such as the Green New Deal, creating “a memorable shift from just a flatline of this idea of bipartisanship.”
Peters has already shown a proclivity toward seeking progressive support, despite his bipartisan rhetoric on the campaign trail:
- Green New Deal: Peters refused to cast a vote against the Green New Deal when he had the chance last year, instead he weakly voted “present”.
- Medicare For All: Behind closed doors, Peters told progressive activists that “The path forward is where you're going to have a ‘Medicare for All’ down the road, that's probably where we're going to go…”
- Votes lock-step with liberal leadership: Peters votes along with super-liberal Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer 95% of the time
