Barnes Doubles Down While Whitmer and Peters Stay Silent

On Monday, Democrat Party Chair Lavora Barnes doubled down on inflammatory comments in which she insisted that supporters of President Trump are “racists,” and that they are “the reason Black people are being murdered for being Black.”

Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox then called the comments “unacceptable,” Barnes responded by telling the press that it was Cox’s job “to listen, not speak.”

In response, Cox issued the following statement: “I refuse to stay silent while 2.3 million Michiganders are accused of being racists and bigots. Unfortunately, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senator Gary Peters cannot say the same. Our state is hurting, and their party chair is working to drive a deeper wedge, instead of working for unity. Is it now the official position of the Michigan Democrat Party that anyone who disagrees with their left-wing progressive agenda is a racist? If so, this is truly a sad day for American democracy and political discourse in our state. Michiganders deserve to know if their governor and junior senator agree with this position.”
