Friday, Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox called on Governor Gretchen Whitmer to expand Executive Order 2020-17 to place Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics under the same regulations as other outpatient facilities specializing in non-emergency medical procedures. Such a move would help preserve valuable medical supplies during the COVID-19crisis, and similar restrictions have been implemented in Ohio, Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
Currently, Executive Order 2020-17 states that hospitals, freestanding surgical outpatient facilities, dental facilities, and all state-operated outpatient facilities must implement a plan to temporarily postpone all non-essential procedures until the termination of the COVID-19 state of emergency.
“Due to the COVID-19 crisis, there is an incredible strain being placed on Michigan’s healthcare system. It makes sense that all nonessential medical procedures be postponed.” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. Cox continued, “With that in mind, I am calling on Governor Whitmer to expand Executive Order 2020-17 to include Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers. This move will save valuable medical supplies in the fight against COVID-19 and reduce the risk of hospitalization due to complications from the abortion procedure. The governor must act to put the health and safety of the people of Michigan ahead of her political position on this issue.”
