Dana’s Dangerous Partisan Precedent
LANSING, Mich., May 22, 2019 – The following statement is from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox regarding Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s ruling which calls into question the constitutionality of Public Act 608 of 2018. The act set forth rules for the gathering of State petitions. Previously, Nessel has used the same process to strike down other laws enacted by Republicans.
“Yet again, Dana Nessel has decided to throw out a law she doesn’t support on purely partisan grounds, and to help Democrats gain an advantage under our State’s election laws. The job of the Michigan Attorney General is to enforce Michigan’s laws, not create them. Dana Nessel has established a dangerous precedent which undermines the elected representatives of our state, and gives the Attorney General’s office almost unlimited power. This is not what government for the people looks like, and Michigan voters should be disgusted.”
