Do Michigan House Democrats Agree With the “Defund the Police” Movement?

As protests across Michigan call for defunding police departments, State Representatives have been silent on the “movement” that seeks to strip funding and support for the law enforcement authorities that keep us all safe. On Tuesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, said she supports the “spirit” of the “Defund the Police” movement.

While Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the movement “makes no sense” and is “extremely flawed”, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said it’s a “local matter”.

“First it was ‘abolish ICE’, and now it’s ‘defund the police’. These calls to dismantle our law enforcement authorities that protect our communities are dangerous.” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. “No one denies that the death of Mr. Floyd was incredibly tragic, and that the actions of the arresting officers were completely abhorrent. As a former law enforcement officer myself, I recognize the need for policing and criminal justice reforms. However, the calls to defund the hardworking men and women keeping us safe is a step too far, and Michiganders deserve to know if those asking for their vote agree.”
