Yesterday, Michigan Democrat Party Chair Lavora Barnes released a statement calling supporters of President Donald Trump, “racist” adding “you are the reason Black people are being murdered for being Black.” The inflammatory remarks were renounced Monday afternoon by Michigan Republican Chairman Laura Cox in an email to supporters.
Within hours of Barnes incendiary remarks, Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement calling for unity but made no mention of Barnes blanket statement calling over 2 million Michiganders racist. This begs the question, do prominent Michigan Democrats like Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senator Gary Peters condone such statements?
“As peaceful protests have degraded into looting and violence, we must come together as Americans to bring about positive change. Lavora Barnes calling over 2 million Michiganders racist only fans the flames,” said Laura Cox, Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. Cox continued, “As representatives for all Michiganders, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senator Gary Peters must condemn Lavora Barnes' statement immediately. It is time to put the people of Michigan above politics.”
