This week, the Michigan Republican Party exposed unlocked ballot drop boxes in Lansing and called for an investigation. Instead, Secretary Benson called for an investigation against us.
LANSING, Mich., October 9, 2020 — In case you missed it, this week, the Michigan Republican Party exposed the City of Lansing for leaving ballot drop boxes unlocked. Chairman Laura Cox called for an immediate investigation into this matter by the Secretary of State. What followed was a partisan attack by the Secretary of State, who used false information to ask the Attorney General’s office to investigate the Michigan Republican Party; and the City of Lansing desperately trying to cover its tracks.
Let’s look at the facts:
In a press release Wednesday, Michigan’s Secretary of State falsely stated that the video showing the unlocked ballot box was taken on September 23rd, before ballots were sent to voters. However, the video in question was taken and posted by a concerned citizen to Facebook on September 25th, one day after ballots were sent to voters.
That same day at a press conference, Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope said the Michigan Republican Party was being “disingenuous”, and claimed the ballot box in question was secure. However, events throughout the rest of the day proved that claim to be false with the drop box not being repaired until Wednesday afternoon. After claiming the box may have been tampered with, and calling for a police investigation, a city of Lansing employee revealed the truth, an inadequate instillation had made it so that the door did not properly shut.
- “A sign posted on the ballot box outside the Foster Community Center says the box is temporarily out of order. Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope confirmed the status of the drop box Wednesday afternoon, about two hours after holding a press conference where he said the box was secure.”
- “Swope later said when a sworn election worker arrived at the box to collect ballots at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, the door was locked. When she tried to close it the door it was not closing and locking properly”
- “It was closing and locking “more poorly than we like”
- “the concrete poured under the box was not level and created problems for the operation of the door.”
Additionally, it was discovered late Wednesday that Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope had posted on the original Facebook post 5 days before the Michigan Republican Party released the video. This indicates that Swope and Lansing officials had known there could be an issue with the ballot box for nearly a week and sent an employee to repair the box only after the Michigan Republican Party brought the issue to light.
But wait, there’s more!
Last night, WILX in Lansing is reported that ANOTHER of the City of Lansing’s ballot drop boxes was found unlocked, this time outside of City Hall. The unlocked box was reported to city authorities at 1:35 p.m. after being emptied at 10:45 a.m. leaving a 3-hour window in which ballots deposited may not have been secure.
Threats of investigation for exposing the truth, attempted cover-ups, and gross negligence… that’s how Democrats are handling ballot security here in Michigan.
