Detroit was awarded the “Golden Padlock Award” for its cover-up surrounding a scandal linked to Secretary Benson’s husband Ryan Friedrichs
LANSING, Mich., September 25, 2020 — In case you missed it, yesterday the City of Detroit was awarded the “Golden Padlock Award” for the cover-up surrounding the “Make Your Date” scandal linked to Secretary Benson’s husband Ryan Friedrichs. Friedrichs was discovered to have purposely deleted emails associated with allegations of conflict of interest and preferential treatment towards Mayor Mike Duggan and a political ally.
“Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and her husband have consistently put partisan goals and their political allies above the best interests of the people of Michigan.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “This award regarding the ‘Make Your Date’ cover-up is well deserved, but could have been just as easily awarded to Jocelyn Benison for her excessive FOIA fees or Governor Whitmer for her total lack of transparency.”
The investigation of Secretary Benson’s husband has received wide media coverage over the last few months:
“Friedrichs' departure comes months after the city's inspector general found that he abused his authority by being complicit in a scheme to delete city emails.” – Detroit Free Press [March 4, 2020]
“Friedrichs and two other top aides abused their authority by directing staff to delete emails detailing those efforts, undermining "the public's trust in an open and transparent government." – Detroit News [March 4, 2020]
“And who was involved with destroying those emails for hizzoner? Ryan Friedrichs, then the city’s chief development officer and the husband of - wait for it - Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson” – Deadline Detroit [September 24, 2020]
