Senator Harris attempted to rewrite the history of President Lincoln in Wednesday’s debate, when trying to justify her opposition to filling the vacant Supreme Court seat
LANSING, Mich., October 9, 2020 — In case you missed it, at Wednesday’s Vice-Presidential debate, Senator Harris made up history regarding President Lincoln not filing a Supreme Court vacancy.
Harris stated that President Lincoln delayed nominating a candidate to fill the Supreme Court vacancy 27 days before the 1864 election because he wanted to do the “right thing”. However, history tells us this scenario is false. According to the Federalist, the Senate was “out of session in October when [Roger B.] Taney died until December 5th, making it difficult for Lincoln to move forward with the confirmation proceedings necessary for a new justice”.
“Kamala Harris and Joe Biden have spent months lying about their own records, so it’s not surprising that they would lie about President Lincoln’s record as well.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “Kamala Harris and her Democrat colleagues in the Senate must put aside these partisan games, do their job, and vote for Amy Coney Barrett to fill the vacancy on our Supreme Court.”
