ICYMI – Michigan Senate Race Set to Be Closest in the Nation

James Out-Raised Peters 4 Consecutive Quarters

Last night, FEC reports were filed with the second quarter of fundraising hauls now in the books. Combat veteran and Detroit businessman John James reported $6.45 million raised in Q2, for a total of $19.5 million for the cycle – outraising Gary Peters by $1.3 million. James has now outraised Peters for four consecutive quarters.

The campaign reported having $9.3 million cash on hand, making the difference in cash on hand between James and his opponent one of the closest in the country. The Michigan Senate race has become one of the most highly anticipated Senate races in the nation.

The Detroit News: “Republican challenger John James has raised more money than Democratic U.S. Sen. Gary Peters for the fourth straight fundraising quarter, according to information released Friday by the two campaigns.”

USA Today: “In Michigan, another state where Republicans are playing offense, the GOP has a rare fundraising advantage. Challenger John James outraised Democratic Sen. Gary Peters for the second quarter in a row”

The Daily Beast: “Michigan provided perhaps the only bright spot for Republicans in second-quarter fundraising numbers. Democratic Sen. Gary Peters reported raising a respectable $5.2 million, but Republican challenger John James bested him with a haul of nearly $6.5 million…James’ fundraising may suggest momentum in that contest.”

WILX: Republican challenger John James raised $6.4 million over three months in his campaign in Michigan for the U.S. Senate, again topping Democratic incumbent Gary Peters, who collected $5.2 million. It was the fourth straight quarter in which the businessman and Army veteran outraised the first-term senator since entering the race about a year ago. Peters reported he had more than $12 million on hand, while James did not release that figure.”

MLive: Republican candidate John James gathered a larger fundraising haul than U.S. Sen. Gary Peters for the fourth consecutive quarter, according to figures released by the two campaigns Friday.”

“The grassroots momentum behind John James is stronger than ever, and it’s clear Michigan is ready to send battle-tested leadership to Washington, who will fight for us day in and day out,” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. “For years, Gary Peters has failed to show up to hold China accountable, protect our small businesses and fight for Michigan. Come this November, Michiganders are ready to elect real change for our state.”
