MIGOP Response to Governor Whitmer’s 2020 State of the State Address

LANSING, Mich., January 29, 2020 – The Michigan Republican Party released the following statement from Chairman Laura Cox regarding tonight’s State of the State address by Governor Gretchen Whitmer: “Tonight’s address is yet another reminder of Gretchen Whitmer's failed first year as governor, and even more of the same empty promises for the future. Instead of committing to work with Republicans to find commonsense solutions to Michigan’s problems, Governor Whitmer made it clear that she’ll go it alone without the legislature if they don’t agree with her tax and spend policies." said Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, "From her support for impeachment and Medicare-for-all, and her unrealistic roads proposal that raises taxes on hardworking Michiganders – Whitmer has proved that she is no different than the same out-of-touch liberal Democrats determined to sabotage the American dream." Is Gary Peters Brave Enough to Stand Up to His Party?

LANSING, Mich., January 29, 2020 – On Tuesday, Roll Call released its “Key Votes 2019”, highlighting Senator Peters’ steadfast loyalty to Democrat leadership. According to the report, Peters joined his party on all 10 of the votes that CQ Roll Call identified as "key votes" for 2019, giving him a 100% score for "Party Unity on Key Votes.”  Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox said the news is especially troubling given the upcoming impeachment vote in the Senate. “Is Gary Peters brave enough to stand up to his own party on a key vote like impeachment? Or will he be just another rubber stamp on Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer's hyper-partisan agenda?” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, "Our state deserves a senator that respects the will of millions of Michigan voters, protects our state’s values and goes to Washington to solve problems, not play party politics. Gary Peters has proven he is unable to do the job.” Most recently, Peters indicated to the press that he sided with Democrats’ call to drag out impeachment proceedings with additional witnesses. The Democrats’ call for extra witnesses is simply an attempt to extend to the House’s partisan impeachment trial into the Senate, wasting more time and taxpayer dollars. The Michigan Senate race is projected to be “competitive” by Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzalez. According to Morning Consult, Peters currently remains the least known member of the Senate, with 34 percent of Michigan voters saying they don’t know who he is or have no opinion of him. On top of that, another 29 percent of voters disapprove of the job he is doing. Since November, Democrats have poured over $2 million dollars into the... More >

We look forward to welcoming the president back to Michigan to celebrate what these monumental trade deals mean for our state.” More >

LANSING, Mich., January 24, 2020 – The Michigan Republican Party released the following statement in response to the announcement that Governor Gretchen Whitmer will be joining Texas Representative Veronica Escobar to deliver the Democrat response to President Trump's State of the Union Address. "Governor Whitmer has failed to prove herself to Michiganders. From our crumbling roads she promised to fix, to holding Michigan's most vulnerable communities hostage for a massive gas tax, it is only fitting that she is joining in on the same D.C. parlor games the people of our state resent.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman, Laura Cox. Cox continued, "The governor broke every promise she made on the campaign trail. She’s had ample time to make a difference for our state, but her past year in office has been nothing more than photo-op's and sound bites. Ultimately, Gretchen Whitmer's decision to side with Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi makes it that much easier to give our state a new governor in 2022." More >

The NAFTA replacement is projected to add 176,000 jobs and $68.2 billion into the United States economy, much of which will be concentrated in the state of Michigan. All six of Michigan's Republican Congressional Delegation Members voted in support of the USMCA, and it will now be sent to the president's desk to be signed into law, over a year after it was introduced to Congress. "Today's passage of the USMCA is a tremendous victory for Michigan's farmers, manufacturers and workers who were being left behind by NAFTA's outdated terms. Thank you to President Trump and Vice President Pence for keeping yet another 2016 campaign promise, and to our Republican Congressional Delegation for ushering this renewed deal through Congress. From the Green New Deal which would decimate Michigan's economy, to Medicare For All that would strip voters of their employer-based healthcare, it's clear that the Democrats’ agenda is not in the best interests of the American people. President Trump has governed exactly as he campaigned - keeping his promises and putting America first. The president’s leadership has reinvigorated the economy and voters everywhere are thriving. With such historic results, the American people cannot afford to take a step back with these radical Democrat policies.” More >

In Case You Missed It, Michigan Senator Gary Peters had the worst week ever....again

In Case You Missed It, Michigan Senator Gary Peters had the worst week ever....again. From being outraised for the second quarter in a row, to slipping in polling, it looks like the career politician is still underwater with Michiganders. After last week, it looks like the least known member of the Senate is in for the fight of his political life this November. Peters Blocks U.S. attorney for Michigan's Western District Last Monday, is was reported by The Detroit News that Senator Peters had decided to block President Trump's choice for U.S. Attorney in Michigan's Western District. Peters declined to meet with the nominee, in a show of partisan politics. Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox weighed in on the matter, stating, "Tom Leonard is a highly qualified candidate for this position, and his nomination received bipartisan support. It is deeply troubling that western Michigan will have to go even longer without a federal prosecutor because of Peters’ partisan pandering. Michiganders deserve better in the U.S. Senate than a career politician who puts party first." And in a column by The Detroit News, Deputy Editorial Director, Ingrid Jacques, makes the following point: "If you need an example of how partisan things have become in our nation’s politics, look no further than what’s playing out in West Michigan. The region is lacking key federal law enforcement officials, thanks to the state’s two Democratic U.S. senators." James Pummels Peters in Fundraising Last week it was announced that combat veteran and Detroit businessman John James out-raised incumbent U.S. Senator Gary Peters by $1 million in the... More >
