Peters Fails to Address His Absence at the Congressional Executive Commission on China

Will Peters Admit Where He Was that He Missed 89% of the Meetings where He Promised “to Work to Hold China Accountable”?  MRP Chairman Laura Cox asked Gary Peters to explain to Michigan voters why he missed 89% of the meetings where he promised “to work to hold China accountable”. When responding to the John James ad on Peters failing to hold China accountable, Peters did not even address being on the committee although he still sits on it 5 years later and has failed to attend 89% of its hearings. In February 2015, when appointed to the Congressional Executive Commission on China, Peters promised to hold China accountable.  In the announcement release, Peters said, “I am honored to serve on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China where I will work to hold China accountable for unfair trade practices and currency manipulation, so that American companies and American workers can compete on a level playing field,"  But when asked by WXYZ Detroit, Peters’ office responded, "As Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee and member of the Armed Services Committee, Senator Peters has a strong record of standing up for Michigan whether it’s holding China accountable for unfair trade practices or working to boost American manufacturing to create jobs in Michigan and take back production of life-saving drugs and medical supplies. Attempts to distort that record are simply misleading.”  Peters’ response never mentions the Congressional Executive Commission on China once. “Peters owes an explanation to Michigan voters why he failed to attend 89% of the meetings... Peters Continues Dishonest Record on China, Glosses Over Failure to Show up For Small Businesses

Over the weekend, Senator Gary Peters continued his track record of dishonesty on holding China accountable, and glossed over his failure to stand up for Michigan's small businesses. On Saturday, Gary Peters’ campaign tried to deflect away from the senator's poor attendance record as a member of a special Congressional Committee on China where he missed 16 of 18 meetings. The campaign stated, "Senator Peters has a strong record of standing up for Michigan whether it's holding China accountable for unfair trade practices or working to boost American manufacturing to create jobs in Michigan and take back production of life-saving drugs and medical supplies. Attempts to distort that record are simply misleading." However, Peters is no stranger to poor attendance. The campaign's weak rebuttal on his inability to hold China accountable comes even though Peters also skipped 84% of House Small Business Committee hearings from 2011-2012 - failing to show up a single time in 2012. "The tepid response given by the Peters camp is more of the same election year lip service that has failed Michiganders consistently over Gary Peters’ more than thirty years in office," said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. "The bottom line is that Gary Peters failed to show up to hold China accountable, and failed to show up for Michigan's small businesses. It should come as no surprise this November when Michiganders choose new leadership who will show up for them." More >

Whitmer Continues to Miss the Mark

Last week, Governor Whitmer was served another round of losses. On Friday, the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan granted a preliminary injunction halting Governor Whitmer’s Executive Order that gyms must remain close despite many other businesses in the same industry reopening. The Honorable Paul Maloney, Chief Judge of Michigan’s Western District, also requested that the Michigan Supreme Court clarify the scope of the governor’s Emergency Powers she has continually exercised over the state’s citizens. The court rulings come as members of Whitmer’s caucus in the Legislature have lost patience with the governor’s policies. Led by Democrat State Representative Sara Cambensy, legislators sent a letter to Governor Whitmer requesting that she reopen Michigan UIA field offices in the same manner as the Secretary of State so Michiganders may finally receive assistance. The move closely mirrors legislators’ bipartisan calls upon Gretchen Whitmer to reverse her nursing home policies that expose negative patients and employees to those who tested positive for COVID-19. Friday night, it was reported by The Detroit Newsthat nursing home officials warned Governor Whitmer of the risk COVID-19 posed in their facilities. Yet, her administration failed to take proper action. “While her mistakes have cost Michiganders dearly, Governor Whitmer has been blinded by her ambition to expand her executive powers,” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. “Instead of spending all her time doing media appearances in an attempt to impress Washington Democrats, Gretchen Whitmer should have focused solely on helping our... Pohutsky Goes All in On Elizabeth Warren’s Radical Agenda

On Saturday, Senator Elizabeth Warren announced her endorsement of State Representative Laurie Pohutsky, who had endorsed Warren in the Democrat Presidential Primary.  Pohutsky, who is running for reelection in Michigan’s 19th House District, took great pride in the endorsement despite the out of touch agenda Sen. Warren seeks to impose on Michiganders. This isn’t the first time Rep. Pohutsky has proudly supported Warren’s radical agenda. Pohutsky has stated that she supports eliminating employer-sponsored health insurance. In a video, the Representative said that she is “happy to stand with ‘Michigan for Single Payer’”– an organization that “fights for single payer universal healthcare in Michigan”. To go even further, Pohutsky has called for a state-funded "Medicare for All"-style program that would be paid for by "implementing a progressive, graduated income tax”. “Elizabeth Warren’s endorsement of Rep. Pohutsky really comes as no surprise since she’s in lock step with the Senator’s extreme agenda that would kick countless Michiganders off their healthcare plans. Pohutsky’s backing of Warren, and vice versa, is a clear sign that constituents of Michigan’s 19th House District deserve new leadership this November.”     More >

When Congress Met To Strengthen Michigan’s Small Businesses Pre-COVID, Gary Peters Skipped 43 Times

Today, the nation is witnessing Michigan’s efforts to revive our economy after COVID-19 hit. But Gary Peters skipped 84% of the Small Business Committee hearings that could have made Michigan jobs more resilient As the nation today focuses on Michigan and our efforts to revive the economy - following damage done both by COVID-19 and Governor Whitmer’s unscientific, unemployment raising and unconscionable nursing home policies - research shows Gary Peters failed to lift a finger to strengthen our small businesses before crisis hit. When Peters had the chance to better prepare our economy for crisis, he skipped 43 of 51 House Small Business Committee hearings from 2011-2012— a shocking 84% of the time. Worse yet, in 2012 Peters did not show up a single time (23 of 23). Peters has a track record of skipping out on things that matter most to Michigan.  When Peters had the chance to hold China accountable as a United States Senator, he attended only two of 18 meetings (89%) of the Congressional Executive Commission on China. “Gary Peters shows up for important work so rarely that new polling shows only 19% of Michigan voters said he deserves a second term,” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. “Gary Peters didn’t show up to stop China and he didn’t show up to make Michigan’s small businesses stronger, so he shouldn’t be surprised when voters don’t show up for him in November.”   More >

Cox Calls on Whitmer To End Executive Dictatorship

The following statement is from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox, regarding today's announcement by Governor Gretchen Whitmer that she will extend Michigan's state of emergency to July 16.  "Our nation works because our system of checks and balances ensures that no individual can become too powerful, yet Governor Whitmer has used the COVID-19 crisis to elevate her office to unprecedented levels of power. It's time for Gretchen Whitmer's experiment with executive dictatorship to end and for her to begin working with the peoples elected legislature once again."    More >

Gary Peters Stands Silent As Racially Insensitive Language Is Used To Discuss Police Reform Legislation In The U.S. Senate

Democrats take black votes for granted again as Gary Peters fails to call out his Democrat Senate leader for referring to police reform legislation sponsored by U.S. Sen. Tim Scott as “token” Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox today called on U.S. Senator Gary Peters to disown a racially insensitive remark made yesterday by one of his own Democrat leaders, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, in which Durbin called police reform legislation sponsored by Senator Tim Scott a “token” effort. Durbin, who holds the second-highest Democrat leadership position in the U.S. Senate, made the remark from the Senate floor. When contacted by media give a response last night, Peters refused to answer. Peters’ delay in calling out Durbin’s comment echoes another recent incident in which Peters and Democrats remained silent after likely Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden made his now infamous “you ain’t black” comment to radio host "Charlamagne tha God”. “As I said the last time this happened, it’s time for Michigan Democrats to come to terms with the hypocrisy in their party,” said Michigan Republican Party Chair Laura Cox. “Gary Peters had yet another opportunity to do so but again he remains silent.”   More >

Cox Welcomes Pence Back To Michigan

The following statement is from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox, regarding today's visit by Vice President Mike Pence to Macomb County.  "We are incredibly excited to have Vice President Pence back in Michigan to show off our state's manufacturing might. Four years ago, President Donald Trump promised to stand up for American workers and fight for Michigan manufacturers. Promises made, promises kept. Under the Trump-Pence team, billions in new manufacturing investment have poured into our state, and factories are moving from Mexico back to Michigan. In November, I am confident the people of the Great Lakes State will vote for four more years of putting America first."   More >

Cox: Hoadley Vote Makes Communities Less Safe

The following statement is from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox, regarding State Representative and Congressional candidate Jon Hoadley’s “no” vote on H.R. 277. The resolution urges local governments throughout Michigan to not “defund the police.” “While leaders like Congressman Fred Upton are fighting for commonsense reforms that will improve community policing and end police brutality, Jon Hoadley has sided with the most extreme elements of the Democrat party. Americans deserve meaningful reforms that address real issues with law enforcement, not blanket calls to ‘defund the police’. Not only is Hoadley pandering to the progressives, he’s voting to make our communities less safe and vilify our brave law enforcement officers.”  More >

Gary Peters Said No To Arlington National Cemetery

When talking about his military reserves status, Peters leaves out his repeated efforts against funding for America’s veterans  Lansing, MI – Americans know of Arlington National Cemetery as the final resting place for more than 400,000 active duty service members, veterans and their families, including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It is a place for America to show its respect for those who have honorably served our nation in war and peace.  It’s a place above politics, for most.  But not for Gary Peters.  In 2016, Peters voted against funding for Arlington National Cemetery that was appropriated to make “additional land available for ground burials”, according to the United States Senate website.  On that day, Peters refused to join the 72 other U.S. Senators who voted yes to support and honor those who served our country. (H.R. 5325, Roll Call Vote #151, 9/28/16) From his earliest days in Washington, Gary Peters has maintained a track record of touting his status in the military reserves but then playing politics with funding for key veterans programs. While a member of the U.S. House in 2010, Peters was forced by Democrat leadership to pull a “politically unpalatable” amendment he introduced which would have slashed fundingfor veterans’ housing. (Politico, 7/30/10) “Gary Peters has taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from drug makers and doubled his personal wealth while in Washington. He finds it easy to serve himself, and finds it even easier to play politics with funding for our military veterans,” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox.  "John James has served our country in...
