Nessel Ad Exploits Sexual Harassment Crisis
But A.G. Candidate won’t stand up to Conyers
LANSING, Mich., November 29, 2017 – Democrat Attorney General candidate Dana Nessel is drawing criticism for an ad published by her campaign which tries to exploit the recent sexual harassment/assault crises engulfing Washington and Hollywood. In the ad Nessel makes light of the crisis by proclaiming "Who can you trust most not to show you their penis in a professional setting? Is it the candidate that doesn’t have a penis? I’d say so.” Ironically, while Nessel asks the voters of Michigan to trust her based largely on being a woman, she has failed to stand up for the women of Michigan by refusing to call for the resignation of embattled Congressman John Conyers.
“Sexual harassment is not a laughing matter,” said Sarah Anderson, Communications Director for the Michigan Republican Party. She continued “in a crisis, a leader fights for what is right, they don’t exploit a crisis for personal gain. Instead of standing up to habitual predator John Conyers and calling for his resignation, Dana Nessel chose to make light of a serious situation. If Dana Nessel won’t speak out against John Conyers, how can the voters of Michigan trust her to stand up for them as Attorney General?”
On Tuesday, in response to the mounting criticism of the ad, Nessel told Fox 2 Detroit "I think the ad was rather tame when it comes to the news stories that have come out whether they are journalists, whether they're in Hollywood, or whether they're political representatives - we've heard some pretty lewd stories coming out." She, however, made no reference to Conyers in her remarks.
