Peters also seeking to paper over the fact that the Michigan Farm Bureau PAC endorsed John James for U.S. Senate
In an unprecedented gambit to build a winning coalition in November, Democrat U.S. Senator Gary Peters’ newest television ad seeks to portray that he has a strong working relationship with President Donald Trump – despite the fact that Peters votes with Nancy Pelosi 95% of the time.
It’s a desperate move because Peters’ campaign has repeatedly attacked John James over his willingness to work with the President on issues important to Michigan families, yet Peters is now spending big money on television to tell Michigan voters that Peters also works with the President.
Peters’ action shows the difficulties he faces in building a winning voter coalition in a state that President Trump previously won with large numbers of formerly Democrat blue-collar voters.
The ad also seeks to paint Peters as a friend of agriculture and small businesses, despite the fact that the Michigan Farm Bureau PAC endorsed John James over Peters in this year’s election.
The desperate nature of the ad is likely reflective of the fact that recent polling showed only 19% of Michigan voters felt Peters deserved reelection.
“If you were to believe Gary Peters, you’d think he has a great working relationship with President Trump and the support of Michigan farmers, yet neither is true,” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. “Not only does Peters vote with Nancy Pelosi 95% of the time, but Michigan’s farmers picked John James to serve them in the U.S. Senate. This ad is nothing more than an acknowledgment that after almost six years in office, only 19% of Michigan voters believe Peters deserves reelection and he is grasping at straws to make the case.”
