Cox Statement On 48th Annual March For Life

LANSING, Mich., January 29, 2021 – The following statement is from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox, regarding the 48th Annual March for Life, being held in Washington D.C. today.

“The March for Life began 48 years ago with the mission to save the lives of innocent unborn children, and that goal remains the same today. As a pro-life American, I could not be prouder of the progress we have made to protect life. The last 4 years saw one of the greatest pro-life administrations in our country’s history, with unwavering support for pro-life laws and the appointment of numerous pro-life judges.

The coming years will be difficult as we battle one of the most radical administrations in our nation’s history, but I am confident that with millions of pro-life Americans continuing to speak out, we will prevail in our goal of saving the lives of the unborn.”

Cox Statement On Whitmer State Of The State

LANSING, Mich., January 27, 2021 – The following statement is from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox, regarding Governor Whitmer’s State of the State Address this evening.

“Over the past year, Governor Whitmer has left our state in disarray due to her failed leadership. Governor Whitmer has spent the last year ignoring the people’s representatives in government by refusing to work with the state legislature, implementing deadly policies like her nursing home strategy, and betraying the trust of voters with her administration’s lack of transparency. The only thing we need to hear from Governor Whitmer tonight is an apology.”

Whitmer’s State Of Disarray

LANSING, Mich., January 27, 2021 – Today, Governor Whitmer will give her State of the State Address, but over the last year, Michiganders have lived in a state of disarray, due to Whitmer’s failed COVID-19 response. It’s important to address the scope of these failures and the millions of lives affected by them.

The New York Times reported that as early as February, Governor Whitmer knew about the COVID-19 virus, but not only did she ignore the warnings, she continued campaigning with then-candidate Joe Biden across the State of Michigan through March. Whitmer even waited to disclose COVID cases in Michigan until polls closed the night of the Michigan Democrat Presidential Primary. Throughout the spring and summer, Whitmer wasted valuable time auditioning to be Joe Biden’s running mate.

Weeks later, Governor Whitmer would sign her first shutdown order, which began nearly a year of destruction to Michigan’s economy and the livelihoods of thousands. Despite her initial shutdown and the political grandstanding that came with it, Governor Whitmer forgot to request FEMA Aid, which would have helped accelerate the delivery of vital PPE and other COVID supplies. While she blamed others for her mistakes, Michiganders continued to suffer due to the incompetence of her administration.

Though Governor Whitmer continued to lecture the people of this state on the importance of complying with her executive orders, her husband became the center of attention, when it was revealed that he attempted to name drop his wife in order to skirt her executive orders and launch their boat.

Governor Whitmer could have listened to her critics and made the course correction needed to get our state back on track. Unfortunately, she doubled down on her failures, and those failures would soon turn deadly.

Early on, there were red flags with how Whitmer was approaching protecting our seniors from COVID, with reports suggesting infected seniors were being “hauled around like laundry bags”. It would come out weeks later, that Governor Whitmer ignored the recommendations of nursing home leaders to put infected seniors in vacant facilities, instead opting to put infected seniors into nursing homes with healthy seniors. If this wasn’t enough, nearly half of the facilities Governor Whitmer chose to put infected seniors in, received below-average quality ratings from the federal government. These decisions led to tragic consequences, with mass COVID outbreaks taking over nursing home facilities and a governor who left them unprepared and undersupplied to handle this crisis. Despite the now deadly results of this policy, and critics lamenting the damage she had done, Governor Whitmer inexplicably dug in her heels, vetoing legislation that would undo her failed nursing home policy; which would have prevented further death and destruction from occurring. This decision to veto such an important piece of legislation came over a month after she admitted to mishandling the COVID crisis.

This tragic loss of life affected thousands of Michigan families, yet Governor Whitmer’s failed leadership continued in many other areas. Her insistence on keeping Michigan’s children out of schools, despite experts rejection of the policy, has done immeasurable damage to their development, and has disproportionally affected underprivileged communities.

Michigan’s economy continues to suffer as a result of Governor Whitmer’s failed leadership, which has destroyed the livelihoods of thousands in our state. Michigan restaurants challenged Governor Whitmer’s policies, calling them unconstitutional and warning of the irreparable damage that continued forced closures would have on the industry. These policies destroyed businesses and the jobs they created for the Michigan economy, yet Governor Whitmer took action late last year to veto unemployment benefits for the workers her shutdown policies affected.

While the failures of Governor Whitmer have piled up to extraordinary levels, one of the biggest issues to come from all of this is the complete disregard for transparency throughout this process. This crisis has created numerous scenarios of questionable dealings behind closed doors, such as Governor Whitmer giving a no-bid contract to her Democrat allies early in the COVID crisis. In another revelation, a recent report from an audit of the state’s COVID response has shown that taxpayers were scammed out of thousands of dollars in PPE funds, and that the state actively used shadow organizations to avoid oversight. More recently, Governor Whitmer’s head of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services abruptly resigned, with the Governor dodging questions as to why this occurred.

This past year has been a series of tragic failure in leadership from Governor Whitmer. The people of Michigan have a right to know what happened, and why these bad decisions were made. Tonight, the people of Michigan want answers, but it’s unlikely Governor Whitmer will respect the people and give them the answers they deserve.

Audit Shows Whitmer Failures In COVID Response

LANSING, Mich., January 26, 2021 – This morning, The Detroit Free Press highlighted that a report by Auditor General Doug Ringler revealed that the state of Michigan had no oversight or controls when purchasing vital supplies of PPE, and other items to battle the COVID-19 virus.

The report says that Governor Whitmer’s administration “allowed state employees to share state credit cards and wired tens of millions of dollars to suppliers before the requested goods were received.”  Furthermore, they “did not have comprehensive emergency procurement policies and procedures in place prior to the COVID-19 emergency, resulting in increased risks for fraud, waste, and loss of funds.”. In addition, a report released by MIRS today revealed that the state was scammed out of nearly $25,000 when attempting to purchase PPE equipment.

“Governor Whitmer has time and again refused calls for transparency in her administration and this new report showing the disaster that is her COVID-19 response explains why.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “In light of these new revelations, I am continuing my call for Governor Whitmer to immediately sign an executive order, subjecting her administration to the Freedom of Information Act, so that the people of Michigan can know the truth of what her administration has done during this pandemic.”

Whitmer Dodges Questions On Health Chief Resignation

LANSING, Mich., January 25, 2021 – In a press conference today regarding the state’s COVID response, Governor Whitmer dodged questions regarding the sudden resignation of the head of Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services, Robert Gordon. When pressed by reporters Kathy Gray and Rick Albin, Whitmer refused to indicate the circumstances surrounding the vacancy, including whether she asked him to resign.

“Governor Whitmer is yet again hiding the truth from the people of Michigan, and her lack of transparency on what’s happening with Robert Gordon and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services amidst a pandemic, is unconscionable.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “I am again calling on Governor Whitmer to fulfill her campaign promise and subject her administration to the Freedom of Information Act. Her handling of the pandemic in Michigan has been a disaster, and Michiganders have a right to know why.”

Non-Profit Linked To Michigan DHHS Under Fire

LANSING, Mich., January 25, 2021 – This morning, the Detroit News reported that the non-profit “Michigan Public Health Institute” has come under fire for its close ties to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and a lack of accountability surrounding “millions of dollars in government spending”.

The non-profit has been used to “execute contracts on behalf of the state health department” but “is not subject to the same audit, contract bidding and open records protocols”. This is not the first time the non-profit has come under fire, after it “was used to establish a nearly $200,000 contract with a Democratic-linked group” for the COVID pandemic response, a move that was condemned by the Michigan Republican Party at the time and the contract has since been canceled.

“Transparency is paramount when serving the people of this great state, and it’s time for Governor Whitmer to honor her campaign promise and open up her administration to the Freedom of Information Act.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “The Whitmer administration has used this organization to get around accountability and give big contracts to her Democrat allies. Governor Whitmer could fix this situation with a single executive order today, allowing FOIA protocols in her office. Unfortunately, Governor Whitmer is likely to continue to allow her administration to operate in the shadows.”

Cox Statement On Whitmer Restaurant Capacity Limit

LANSING, Mich., January 22, 2021 – The following statement is from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox, regarding Governor Whitmer’s announcement that restaurants opening February 1st will be limited to 25% capacity and require a 10 p.m. curfew.

“Governor Whitmer continues to cripple restaurants with restrictions that are not rooted in science and only serve to kick businesses while their down. While the Governor is busy taking a new gig as DNC Vice-Chair, she continues to leave employees in the restaurant business out of a job. I call on Governor Whitmer to do the right thing and allow Michigan restaurants to operate at a more reasonable capacity without curfews, so that they can begin to undo the severe damage they have taken because of her shutdowns.”

Granholm Has Conflict Of Interest In Energy Appointment

LANSING, Mich., January 22, 2021 – According to reports earlier this week by ABC News, President Biden’s nominee for Energy Secretary, former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, has millions of dollars in energy investments. This is a troubling revelation, as she prepares to face confirmation hearings in the Senate.

“Michigan has a lot of experience with Jennifer Granholm putting her own interests over the interests of the people she serves, and this new revelation shows she has not changed since being Governor of Michigan.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “In light of this conflict of interest, I call on the Senate to reject her nomination as Energy Secretary and for President Biden to pick a more suitable candidate who will represent the interests of the American people over their own financial interests.”

Biden Reverts To Failed Obama Era Policies

LANSING, Mich., January 21, 2021 – Mere hours after being sworn in as President, promising unity and peace between all Americans, President Biden signed a slew of executive orders immediately reverting our nation to failed Obama era policies.

President Biden began by rejoining the Paris Climate Accord, which will cripple American energy and its ability to compete in the world. Furthermore, President Biden signed executive orders that would begin to undo the immense progress made on immigration reform.

“We face a challenging time ahead in restoring America’s economy from this unprecedented pandemic and President Biden’s decision to revert to the failed policies of President Obama will make that hill an even steeper one to climb.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “I hope and pray that President Biden will recommit to the promises of yesterday’s inauguration speech and seek to unify our nation by moving us forward, not by reversing course.”
