Saturday, November 21, 2020 - The following is a joint letter issued by Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox to the Michigan Board of State Canvassers.
To the Members of the Board of State Canvassers:
This board faces a stark choice: it can either ignore numerical anomalies and credible reports of procedural irregularities, leaving the distrust and sense of procedural disenfranchisement felt by many Michigan voters to fester for years; or it can adjourn for fourteen days to allow for a full audit and investigation into those anomalies and irregularities before certifying the results of the 2020 General Election, allowing all Michiganders to have confidence in the results. On behalf of the Republican National Committee (“RNC”) and Michigan Republican Party (“MRP”) , we encourage the Board to grant the request made by John James for Senate, Inc. (“James Campaign”) and adjourn for fourteen days to allow for a full, transparent audit of Wayne County’s 2020 General Election results.
We echo the concerns voiced by the James Campaign and Mr. James in their request and letter of November 20, 2020. The procedural and accounting irregularities identified by the James Campaign’s request are credible, deeply concerning, and threaten to undermine Michigander’s faith in the integrity of the November 2020 General Election. To simply gloss over those irregularities now without a thorough audit would only foster feelings of distrust among Michigan’s electorate. In light of the already unprecedented nature of this election—conducted largely by mail in the midst of an ongoing pandemic, it would be a grievous dereliction of this Board’s duty to the people of Michigan not to ensure that the irregularities identified by the James Campaign are thoroughly investigated by a full audit before certifying Wayne County’s results. As the James Campaign has adeptly explained, such an audit could be completed during a fourteen day adjournment of this Board, and neither that adjournment nor the audit of Wayne County’s results would impermissibly delay certification of the election results beyond the statutory deadline of December 7, 2020.
Election officials in other states have taken discretionary steps to ensure that their voters could have full faith in the integrity of their state’s results. In Georgia, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger ordered a full, statewide audit by hand when confronted with reports of numerical anomalies, procedural errors, and alleged malfeasance despite not being required to do so by Georgia’s laws. Secretary Raffensperger noted that though he thought it was very unlikely that recount would overturn the state’s election results, there was no reason to hurry certification along without first ensuring that all reported procedural irregularities were fully examined. He explained, “With the margin being so close, it will require a full by-hand recount in each county. This will help build confidence. It will be an audit, a recount, and a recanvass all once; it will be a heavy lift, but we will work with the counties to get this done in time for our state certification.” Secretary Raffensperger took this discretionary decision to engage in a full hand recount despite Georgia law not necessarily requiring a full audit by statewide hand recount. See O.C.G.A. § 21-2-498 and SEB Rule 183-1-15-.04. Secretary Raffensperger made this decision in recognition of the imperative that if our government is to function with any legitimacy, voters must have full confidence in the integrity of an election’s result, regardless of whether their preferred candidate won. We encourage this Board to follow that example and order a full audit of Wayne County’s election results and receipts to ensure that Michiganders receive at least the same level of procedural safeguards as Georgians.
We are distressed by the comments of some public officials in Michigan casually dismissing the significant problems and irregularities seen in Wayne County. While those comments may be motivated by a desire to bolster confidence in the election results, its actual effect has been to make the over 2.6 million Trump and Republican voters in the state even more distrustful that Michigan’s election officials are ignoring their demands for free and fair elections. These issues cannot simply be ignored away or brushed under the rug, they must be confronted and thoroughly examined. We implore you to listen to the pleas of your voters and order the audit.
LANSING, Mich., November 20, 2020 – On Tuesday evening, the Wayne County Board of Canvassers passed a resolution calling for Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to audit the election results in Wayne County, and the Michigan Republican Party demands that she follow through.
When it became clear that 70% of the Detroit absentee counting boards were out of balance, the Wayne County Board of Canvassers agreed unanimously to request an audit of the Wayne County election results. This comes after the Secretary of State’s office pledged to help fix the issues faced by Wayne County in the August 2020 primary, where 72% of the Detroit absentee counting boards were out of balance. They failed to do so.
“Jocelyn Benson has shirked her responsibility as Secretary of State for far too long, and we are demanding she follow through on an audit of the Wayne County election results.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “We are putting Benson on notice, the Michigan Republican Party will exhaust every legal option to ensure that we uncover the truth of what happened on election night and the days that followed. We will be holding her feet to the fire so that she will do her job and audit this vote.”
This FIGHT is not over!
From voting software giving thousands of President Trump’s votes to Joe Biden, to miscalled races across the state, and the complete lack of transparency by elected officials at TCF Center in Detroit – we will not stop until these issues are investigated and the wrongs righted.
While we continue to fight for President Trump and John James in the courts, I want to celebrate the victories the Democrats could not steal from us. I raised and spent more funds than any other Chairman in the last 15 years, nearly $33,000,000. We also expanded our grassroots army online, adding 5,500 new members and raising over $1,100,000 in small donations – nearly doubling totals from the 2018 cycle.
With your help, we built the largest field operation in Michigan’s history, and made over 9,000,000 voter contacts. We opened more Trump Victory offices than ever before, and it was last reported that President Trump earned more than 2,649,000 votes – more than any Republican candidate in history. And the fight continues.
We were also able to knock off 2 incumbent Democrat State Representatives to maintain our 58-52 majority in the State House. We made gains in the U.S. House of Representatives, taking back the 3rd Congressional District to and continuing the fight against Nancy Pelosi. We were able to flip one Democrat held seat on each of the Michigan State University Board of Trustees, University of Michigan Board of Regents, and the Wayne State Board of Governors to gain 3 statewide victories.
As the Fake News media claimed there were no voting irregularities in Michigan, I was proud to stand with RNC Chairman Ronna McDaniel in calling for an investigation and demanding a fair and honest process that counts every Legal Vote. As the events in Detroit unfolded, I was proud to stand with hundreds of Republicans outside TCF Center demanding transparency.
And while Gretchen Whitmer, Jocelyn Benson, and Dana Nessel defend the actions of Democrats locking Republican poll watchers out of precincts and backdating ballots, I am proud to join the Trump campaign’s legal team in collecting and organizing over 160 sworn affidavits that will be crucial in the coming days as we continue to take legal action.
The actions we are taking today could not only have a huge impact on the 2020 election, but may have an even larger impact on future elections. Make no mistake about it, Whitmer, Benson, and Nessel will take every duplicitous lesson they learn from this election to try and secure their own reelections in 2022. As we saw this week at the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, the Democrats’ mob rule cannot continue.
We must build on these efforts as we continue this fight and for all of the battles ahead. I promise to continue working harder than ever for Republicans across our great state. All of this starts with the support of our wonderful grassroots supporters, and precinct delegates, who put in hours upon hours of work for our party. Thank You!
We still have work to do in Michigan, and this battle is far from complete.

Chairman, Michigan Republican Party
LANSING, Mich., November 19, 2020 – In affidavits released last night, Wayne County Canvassers Monica Palmer and William Hartmann rescinded their votes to certify the election results in Wayne County. In her affidavit, Palmer states, “The [public] comments made accusations of racism and threatened me and members of my family.”, she continued saying “I believed I had no choice but to certify the results despite my desire to oppose certification based on the incomplete record.” after being falsely told by Wayne County counsel Janet Anderson-Davis that she did not have that discretion.
William Hartmann cited the same reasoning in his affidavit, stating “Ms. Anderson-Davis told us that we must vote to certify on that night.” and that “we were informed that this consideration was outside the scope of the Board’s authority.”, which proved to be untrue.
“After hours of threats and slander by Democrat plants, the Wayne County Board of Canvassers was intimidated into certifying the election results, despite 70% of Detroit’s absentee counting boards having irregularities.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “I applaud these canvassers for trying to rescind their certification votes. The Michigan Republican Party condemns the actions of Democrats and we will continue to fight for transparency and integrity in Wayne County elections. The Republican canvassers simply want to extend the canvass to provide more answers and a fair, accurate election count. That is reasonable action. I condemn the threats and intimidation that happened. There is no place in decent society for mob rule.”
LANSING, Mich., November 17, 2020 – The following statement is from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox, regarding the Wayne County Board of Canvassers meeting today where they failed to certify the election results in Wayne County.
“The people of Michigan deserve to know what happened in Wayne County on Election Day and the days following. I am proud that, due to the efforts of the Michigan Republican Party, the Republican National Committee and the Trump Campaign, enough evidence of irregularities and potential voter fraud was uncovered resulting in the Wayne County Board of Canvassers refusing to certify their election results. This action will allow more time for us to get to the bottom of these deeply troubling irregularities. The people of Michigan deserve fair, open and transparent elections, and we will continue to fight for just that.”
LANSING, Mich., November 16, 2020 – While Democrats in Congress continue to stonewall COVID relief, President Trump’s Operation Warp Speed has effectively seen the creation of multiple successful vaccinations for the COVID-19 virus, which could be distributed by the end of the year.
This morning, Moderna announced that its vaccine had entered its latest trial of testing with a nearly 95% success rate. This news comes a week after Pfizer announced similar success with its own vaccination. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, Operation Warp Speed has been “selecting the most promising countermeasure candidates and providing coordinated government support.”, which includes both financial investments in vaccination development, as well as the reduction of unnecessary regulations to speed up the development and distribution process.
“From day one, President Trump worked to ensure that American ingenuity would be unleashed to develop a cure. Thanks to his efforts we now have two potential vaccines, that will allow the Great American Recovery to begin.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “Operation Warp Speed will guarantee that a free vaccination is distributed quickly to all Americans, potentially by the end of the year, and we have President Trump’s leadership to thank.”
LANSING, Mich., November 15, 2020 – The following statement is from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox, regarding the Whitmer administration’s COVID-19 shutdown announcement.
“Yet again Governor Whitmer continues to show her contempt for the people’s elected representatives. Instead of working with our elected representatives at the state and local level, she is trying a one-size-fits-all approach that will only exacerbate the issues our state and its economy are facing. Small businesses, particularly restaurants, cannot sustain themselves through another lock-down, and these new orders will certainly spell doom for the livelihood of many. I call on Governor Whitmer to reconsider her course of action and meet with our legislators to come up with a solution that works for all Michiganders.”
LANSING, Mich., November 13, 2020 – Continued evidence of election irregularities throughout the state have prompted Republicans in the state legislature to demand Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson launch a full audit of the election results.
In a joint letter sent to Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Senator Lana Theis and Senator Tom Barrett demanded that Benson audit the election results stating, “These claims deserve our full attention and diligent investigation to ensure fairness and transparency in our election process.”. In order to ensure that every legal vote is counted, both Senator Theis and Senator Barrett are adamant that the audit occurs before the certification of the election results. This comes after Senator Ruth Johnson also called for an audit of the election results.
“Jocelyn Benson has spent this entire election cycle ignoring the warning signs, and unfortunately her negligence created an election riddled with irregularities.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “I applaud Senator Theis, Senator Barrett, and Senator Johnson for their leadership in standing up for the voters of Michigan. I join their call for Benson to audit the election results before certification so that we can begin to restore trust in our election process in this state.”
LANSING, Mich., November 12, 2020 – For months, individuals from both sides of the aisle warned Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson of the vulnerabilities with mass mail-in voting. Despite these warnings, it has become increasingly apparent that Benson’s unpreparedness has caused massive election irregularities in Michigan, such as inaccurate voter rolls often showing voters at the wrong addresses or showing voters that were deceased.
According to the Detroit News, “Roughly 500,000 absentee ballot applications were returned between May and August for reasons that included the individuals had since died or moved” after Benson mailed out ballot applications to a highly outdated list of registered voters.
In another case, ballot drop boxes were left unlocked in the City of Lansing, and when the Michigan Republican Party called for an investigation, Benson instead called for an investigation into the MIGOP.
“It is clear that despite multiple red flags leading up to the election, Benson allowed her partisanship and arrogance to get the better of her, exposing Michiganders to a compromised election system in our state.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “Instead of trying to rectify her mistakes which have led to election irregularities all over Michigan, Benson is doubling down and impeding any investigation into these matters. The people of Michigan have every right to know the truth of what happened this election, and we will not rest until the truth is uncovered.”
LANSING, Mich., November 11, 2020 – Democrats suffered massive losses down ballot during the 2020 election cycle, and nowhere was that more apparent than in the significant reduction of the Democrat majority in the U.S. House. The Michigan Republican Party was proud to play its part in putting the pressure on Democrats going into the 2022 election.
Going into this year’s election, Democrats held a 14-seat majority in the U.S. House, but when all the votes are counted, Democrats will have lost anywhere from 9-12 seats to Republicans, giving them their slimmest majority in decades. The MIGOP played its part here in Michigan, flipping the 3rd District with the victory of Peter Meijer, electing Lisa McClain in the open 10th District, and holding onto all currently held Republican seats in the state.
“The people of Michigan and citizens across our nation rejected the socialist House Democrat agenda on election night and in 2022 Nancy Pelosi will lose the speakers gavel once and for all.” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. Cox continued, “Our record-breaking ground game this election has laid the foundation for Republican victories across Michigan in 2022 and beyond.”
