On Tax Day, Remember That Gary Peters Voted For Increased Taxes And Fees 103 Times

Gary Peters refused a “No New Taxes” pledge...and he kept his word!

As Michigan residents reach the Tax Day deadline to file their tax returns, voters should remember that U.S. Senator Gary Peters voted to raise taxes and fees at least 103 times while “serving them” in Congress.

This should not be surprising. Before getting to Washington, D.C., Peters refused to take a “No New Taxes” pledge while running for one of many, many offices in his 30-year career— on this occasion, when he ran for governor. (Peters has also run for city council, State Senate, Attorney General, the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.)

Among his 100-plus votes for tax and fee hikes, Peters has: voted against the 2017 Senate tax reform bill that lowered individual tax rates (H.R. 1, Roll Call Vote #284, 11/29/17); voted against ending a tax on employer-provided healthcare insurance (H.R. 1628, Roll Call Vote #177, 7/27/17); and even voted to stop an effort to eliminate the federal “Death Tax” (S. Con. Res. 11, Roll Call Vote #114, 3/26/15).

Peters also opposed a balanced budget amendment that would have kept taxes and spending under control. (H.R. 3877, Roll Call Vote #260, 8/1/19)

During his time in the U.S. Senate, Peters has voted at least 54 times in favor of higher taxes and fees:

  • During the 116TH Congress, Peters has voted at least 3 times in favor of higher taxes and fees.
  • During the 115TH Congress, Peters voted at least 32 times in favor of higher taxes and fees.
  • During the 114TH Congress, Peters voted at least 19 times in favor of higher taxes and fees.

During his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, Peters voted at least 49 times in favor of higher taxes and fees:

  • During the 113TH Congress, Peters voted at least 9 times in favor of higher taxes and fees.
  • During the 112TH Congress, Peters voted at least 9 times in favor of higher taxes and fees.
  • During the 111TH Congress, Peters voted at least 31 times in favor of higher taxes and fees.

“You may not expect a 30-year politician like Gary Peters to keep his word, but when he said he couldn’t stop himself from more new taxes and fees, he definitely meant it,” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. “As Michigan families file their returns on Tax Day, they should remember that Gary Peters tried to raise federal taxes and fees at least 103 times— even as he collects multiple government paychecks and traveled the world on their dime.”
