Yesterday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer used her time during Michigan’s COVID-19 press conference update as a bully pulpit to push her partisan agenda against Republicans. Whitmer exclaimed, “I implore everyone in Washington, D.C., to stop the partisanship and get something done,”. Whitmer and her State Budget Director clearly sought to lay blame on any future budget cuts with GOP leaders in Washington.
As Whitmer has made calls for bipartisanship during the COVID-19 pandemic, she has used her platform as governor to chide and criticize GOP leadership at state and federal levels. Back in April, when the virus hit its peak in Michigan, she used a press conference with labor leader Ron Bieber to praise Democrat politicians. The governor has also joined countless cable TV shows, late night comedy segments, and been profiled in magazines, in which she blamed issues in the state of Michigan squarely on President Trump.
Whitmer has also used fixtures of her administration like State Budget Director Chris Kolb to chastise Republicans, despite her own administration’s misgivings.
“Gretchen Whitmer’s hypocrisy on bipartisanship is glaring. From protests to press conferences, she has proved to be the most partisan governor in recent history.” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. “Governor Whitmer should live up to her own mantra of ‘building bridges’, not dispatching more discord.”
